<P><EM><STRONG>architectura</STRONG>, Zeitschrift für Geschichte der Baukunst (Journal of the History of Architecture)</EM>, ist eine internationale Zeitschrift mit Aufsätzen – teils in englischer Sprache – zu Themen der Bau- und Architekturgeschichte sowie mit einem regelmäßigen Rezensionsteil. </P> <P>Neben der Historischen Bauforschung widmet sich die Zeitschrift Themen der Bau- und Stadtbaugeschichte sowie der Architekturgeschichte von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart. Die Aufsätze werden durch die Herausgeber und durch unabhängige Berichterstatter (peers) geprüft. </P> <P>Die <EM>architectura</EM> ist im Arts and Humanities Citation Index und im European Reference Index for the Humanities and the Social Sciences gelistet. </P> <P>Die Zeitschrift erscheint zweimal jährlich – seit 2018 bei De Gruyter, zuvor im Deutschen Kunstverlag. </P>

<p>»The dematerialised corner is the analogous solution to the corner problem« writes Hilmar Mund (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="j_atc-2022-1003_ref_019">Mund 1980</xref>, 55). The Doric triglyph conflict probably represented the oldest conflict in architecture up to that point. However, the study of modern skeletal construction suggests analogous geometric and constructive conflicts. But even in solid construction, different corner designs can be seen over time, which indicate conflicts in the sector of the corner of the building. Both design principles lead to different solution approaches. The combination of the tectonic and stereotomous construction principles creates further possibilities for designing the corner of the building. However, there does not seem to be a solution to the corner problem across all construction methods.</p></abstract>

<p>Aligning load-bearing vertical posts to make an interior space is a longstanding practice, evident in Mediterranean architecture, where stone columns became the standard among all the materials and forms used by the Greeks and Romans. From the late Antiquity to the Middle Ages, Christians and Muslims repurposed those stone columns for their prayer halls. This paper delves into the architectural practices of the Iberian Peninsula from the 8th to 10th century, focusing on the strategic use of spolia columns at the ends of colonnades. Though its colonnaded interior spaces are apparent continuity from early Christian basilicas, close observation reveals that their ›architects‹ prioritized using reused columns at the ends of the colonnades. It questions the balance between maximizing column usage and adhering to logical construction principles.</p></abstract>

<p>As with every building involving architectural orders, corner solutions are closely related, in Palladio’s work, to the rapport between the orders and the overall building and, in the case of orders engaged to the wall, to the intense dialectic between walls and columns. Through the analysis conducted on a series of projects and realisations, containing significant passages of Palladio’s research around these themes, the study returns a path that winds its way from one project to the next with continuous reworkings and completely personal inventions. Possible links and derivations from ancient and modern models, mainly from the Roman ambit, are also highlighted and discussed, with attention to the ways in which the different sources are used in design, up to the achievement of innovative formal outcomes.</p></abstract>

<p>Der Beitrag stellt die diversen Arten der Gestaltung von Wänden und Gewölben an den verschiedenen Ausprägungen von inneren Ecken zusammen und schließt aus den Übereinstimmungen zwischen ihnen auf die unausgesprochenen Richtlinien, denen sie folgten. Die strenge Regelmäßigkeit, die sich abzeichnet, wird darauf bezogen, dass die Architektur in der Renaissance als Wissenschaft angesehen werden sollte. Fortlaufende Vergleiche zeigen, dass die Systematik der Gestaltung ebenso wie diejenige der Architekturtheorie nicht von der Antike abgeleitet, sondern eher ein Erbe der Gotik war, obwohl die Elemente der Gliederung, die Säulenordnungen, aus der Antike stammten und die Gliederung auf die Wände statt wie in der Gotik auf den Raum ausgerichtet wurde. Die Sforza-Kapelle wird besonders herausgestellt, weil Michelangelo hier ähnlich wie in den gleichzeitigen Entwürfen für S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini mit den üblichen Regeln brach, indem er die Gliederung auf den Raum ausrichtete und sie zudem auf die visuelle Wirkung abstimmte.</p></abstract>

<p>Participants in two competitions for the Czech National Theatre in Prague (1854 and 1866) had to deal with a challenging building programme, especially with the unsuitable building site, which had an acute angle at one corner. Scholarly literature has focused mainly on the executed project by Josef Zítek, whose personality is also surrounded by the myth of the genius architect. By analysing six competing architectural designs, the presented paper argues that although Zítek’s project was the best in terms of the external form of the building, in terms of the solution to the problematic acute corner, most of the other competitors also approached the task with an unusual degree of resourcefulness. Especially Franz Fröhlich, who, even on an unfavourable plot, managed to design a symmetrical building, and Ignác Ullmann, who, against all period architectural opinions, courageously used acute angle instead of hiding it. Thus, the paper argues that most architects approached the corner problem with original solutions and that, therefore their works witness the innovative power and possibilities of the 19<sup>th</sup> century architectonical approaches.</p></abstract>

<p>In the late 19<sup>th</sup> century, German and French residential and commercial buildings began to display clear differences in the design of the corners of buildings, which to this day continue to shape the cityscapes of both countries and distinguish them from one another. In France, the practice of cutting off the corners of buildings and thus connecting the façades more organically began in the 1840s, but the structuring was continued without emphasizing the corner bay. In the search for a national architectural style, from the 1870s the Germans combined the <italic>pan coupé</italic> imported from Paris with the most characteristic German architectural element – the corner oriel, which was extended as a turret in the roof zone. While the domed <italic>rotonde</italic> in the Parisian style also spread in Germany in a modified form, the French never warmed to the corner oriel and the turret; the design emphasis on a tower-like accentuated corner of the building, on the other hand, changed the cityscape of Paris after 1900.</p></abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title><p>Contrary to the view that in the history of architecture, there is no explicitly formally articulated public housing as such, the architecture of Red Vienna has indeed produced specific architectural forms of public building. In its settlements the treatment of the corner of the block plays an important role. The corner, one of the most prominent and economically valuable parts of the bourgeois perimeter-block, is often weakened in the architecture of Red Vienna through various types of volumetric recesses. The clarity of the urban gesture, which gives the public realm more space by foregoing the maximum envelope, stands in contrast to the variety of the differing recess-articulations. On the basis of twelve examples, weak corners are typologically analysed and conceptually differentiated. This underexposed area of Red Vienna’s architecture is not dealt with exhaustively here, instead it shows possible access points to the question of recognisably public architecture.</p></abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title><p>Richard Neutra’s corner windows are primarily determined by three factors: the structural system, the appearance of the facades, and the view from the inside to the outside. This paper analyzes their evolution step by step. The main elements that characterize his corners include: plastically articulated bands of windows drawn around the corner, initially following the example of Erich Mendelsohn and then interpreted more freely; wall panels and ceiling slabs that do not meet at the corners to make it clear that the building is not based on a box; a structural system of slender columns integrated into the façade, whose spacing is first determined by standard steel casements and then made more flexible by the introduction of large fixed glass panels; various structures that replace corner supports with mitered glass corners, especially the so-called spiderleg.</p></abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title><p>After Mies van der Rohe had moved from Berlin to Chicago in 1938 to head the architecture school of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), his approach expanded beyond paradigmatic new solutions for a range of building types – from skyscrapers to country houses – towards an emphasis on the design of structural details – not necessarily optimizing their functionality, but rather creating an expressive, photogenic, carefully proportioned appearance – inspired, but not limited, by their structural and material qualities. Corners were the most poignant locations of these interventions, which he considered ›universal solutions,‹ applicable again and again with only small variations. Several buildings on the campus of IIT, high-rises for apartments and offices, as well as numerous mid-size office and educational buildings illustrate the evolution of this approach.</p></abstract>

<article-title>Complicated Simplicity</article-title>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title><p>The construction of universities in Germany in the 1960s led to the development of numerous construction systems, as the limitation of different components facilitated prefabrication. Due to the demand for flexibility, variability, and expandability of the newly constructed university buildings, skeleton systems played a significant role. They were distinguished primarily by their corner solutions and the design of their nodes in the building system. Using the example of the Marburg Construction System by Helmut Spieker, this paper explores the significance of corner solutions in the development of construction systems in the 1960s. The basic principle of the system in Marburg is based on side-by-side and stacked table units with four columns, allowing the edge and corner columns to be non-oversized and corner fields to be pre-fabricated without special elements due to its multiple columns configuration. The paper examines both the historical derivation of this corner principle and its impact on the construction grid as well as the appearance of the completed buildings.</p></abstract>
