<P><EM><STRONG>architectura</STRONG>, Zeitschrift für Geschichte der Baukunst (Journal of the History of Architecture)</EM>, ist eine internationale Zeitschrift mit Aufsätzen – teils in englischer Sprache – zu Themen der Bau- und Architekturgeschichte sowie mit einem regelmäßigen Rezensionsteil. </P> <P>Neben der Historischen Bauforschung widmet sich die Zeitschrift Themen der Bau- und Stadtbaugeschichte sowie der Architekturgeschichte von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart. Die Aufsätze werden durch die Herausgeber und durch unabhängige Berichterstatter (peers) geprüft. </P> <P>Die <EM>architectura</EM> ist im Arts and Humanities Citation Index und im European Reference Index for the Humanities and the Social Sciences gelistet. </P> <P>Die Zeitschrift erscheint zweimal jährlich – seit 2018 bei De Gruyter, zuvor im Deutschen Kunstverlag. </P>

<p>In 1971, Heinrich Klotz, who had returned from a stay as a visiting professor at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, founded architectura. Zeitschrift für Geschichte der Baukunst/Journal of the History of Architecture with the financial support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Klotz experiments with different formats of essays but retires as editor in 1976. Under subsequent editors, architectura continues to develop into the leading journal for the history of architecture, whose essays are not subject to any temporal or local limitations and reflect the entire breadth of research in the history of architecture.</p>

<p>In 1976, Wulf Schirmer, professor of architectural history at the University of Karlsruhe (TH), followed Heinrich Klotz as editor of the architectura and headed the editorial team until 2002. During this time, the journal developed into an open forum for the most diverse forms of research in architectural history – chronologically from the ruins of the 4th millennium BC to the architecture of the late 20th century, topographically from Europe, the Mediterranean, Mesopotamia, Asia and Russia to North and South America, and methodologically from architectural research to art history, architectural theory and the preservation of historical monuments.</p>

The relationship with the Koldewey-Gesellschaft and the adaptation of international standards in science are also addressed.</p>

<p>The increasing international acceptance of the term ›building research‹ dates back to 1924. The basic approach of understanding historical buildings through building surveys and precise observations is older. To this day, the core of the method has remained working directly on the object in question: the building itself is the main source, regardless of the period and epoch. The graphic representation of the inventory and the scientific results on building history, building techniques and reconstruction play a key role. This small subject has proven itself in many fields, from university research to the preservation of historical monuments, but is currently facing great challenges. The rapid development of new technologies and innovative partner subjects demands a review of methods, including questions of future publication types and languages. New fields of activity are opening up: architecture after 1945 and the increasing destruction caused by war. The educational situation at the universities is becoming more and more uncertain.</p>

<p>The ›Aachen School‹ of architectural history analyzes and interprets built structures with the holistic perspective of a trained architect. The first step is a very detailed investigation of the building, using the methods of Historical Building Research. At the same time, archival sources and structural considerations help to develop a clearer picture of a building’s original design concept and its development during the process of planning and realization. Based on this preparatory research, the focus is broadened, applying methods and discussing topics from the perspective of art history and architectural theory and integrating, if necessary, further interdisciplinary collaboration.</p>
<p>The overarching premise is that architecture, beyond its time-bound historical condition, is also determined by essential timeless or metahistorical characteristics. These form an important level of knowledge for architectural historians as well as for architects. Architectural history, thus, is not a mere historical science, but also makes an important contribution to the general architectural discourse.</p>

Das Datenportal schafft somit die Grundlage für einen zeitgemäßen professionellen Umgang mit Forschungsdaten, der die Anforderungen der Forschungsförderer erfüllt und die Zusammenarbeit innerhalb der Fachcommunity sowie den Austausch zwischen Praxis und Wissenschaft befördert.</p>

<p>Building archaeological findings are the primary sources of historic building research and an important basis for object-oriented interpretation in architectural history. In order to preserve the spatial, temporal and other content-related cross-references and contexts that are particularly valuable for analysis, a loose collection of diverse presentation formats such as descriptive texts, findings sheets, plan drawings and 3D representations has become established. However, this diversity is also a reason for the lack of accessibility and sustainable connectivity of this useful information. Linked Open Data technologies of the Semantic Web offer the possibility of making the findings available in a human- and machine-readable form, together with their diverse references. This requires consistent ›semantic modelling‹ of the material evidence in ontological form, oriented on specialist scientific needs.</p></abstract>

<p>The notion of dissonance expands on Norbert Huse’s concept of Uncomfortable Monuments to include the identification of conflicting heritage communities emerging from divergent practices of use and memory and differing political, cultural and social affiliations. This notion can be ascribed to any cultural heritage and invokes multi-perspective approaches to research, participation and mediation strategies. In border areas and sites of conflict, the dissonance model can become a laboratory for diverse site- and situation-specific perspectives on and inclusive processes of negotiation of existing cultures of memory and commemoration. Fostering the individuals’ right to participate in the process of definition, research into, and interpretation of cultural heritage, the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society (2005) provides instructions on the study of dissonant cultural heritage and explicitly recommends the democratic participation of different perspectives in the shared co-production of heritage.</p></abstract>

The paper suggests taking advantage of already existing knowledge and competence worldwide by deliberately networking beyond its own field despite extra work and conceptual quandary. It outlines some approaches and expects these to lead to the utilisation of informational resources that are often overlooked, the replacement of the last remnants of hegemonic interpretation in the 19th century, and the confident connectivity to those disciplines that share the discourse on planning, building, city, space, and architecture.</p>

<p>From the 1930s to the 1940s, Mumbai was a city of modern architecture marked by international influences, but also the birthplace of a modern Indian architectural style that became fully expressed after 1947. This heritage has rarely been considered by international research, despite its recent inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List (2018) and the very active involvement of local groups. A report published in the journal Nature in 2019 highlighted the consequences of climate change and rising water levels on the city of Mumbai, built on an artificial peninsula. Hence the urgent need to complete the task of researching, locating and digitizing sources on the modern architecture of Mumbai, a heritage doubly threatened by the effects of global warming and excessive urban development.</p></abstract>

<p>From the perspective of architectural research, globalization is often reduced to a merely recent phenomenon of construction firms and star architects operating worldwide today. This article argues for a global architectural history that examines the globally effective processes of exchange and circulation of capital, labor, and the increasingly unified standards of form, style, and material in building practice from a historical perspective as well: architectural globalization, therefore, can also be traced back, among other constellations, to a phase of an entanglement of the world that coincided with the height of European imperialism and colonialism around 1900. As a case-study serves in this essay the International Concession (Settlement) of Tientsin in China, where between ca. 1860 and 1945 altogether nine imperial powers from Japan, Europe (also the German Empire) and the USA developed their trading posts as veritable city quarters with representative architectures. Irony of history back-translated into present times: Today, these urban and architectural fragments from imperial pasts are being appropriated as an integral part of a veritable cultural heritage industry in which China itself, with the megacity of Tianjin, is now presenting itself as a global player, not least in the means of architecture and urban planning.</p>

<p>The short intervention pleads for a comprehensive analysis of architecture in the sense of an encompassing history of the built environment. Trespassing beyond the study of formal invention and mere aesthetic qualities, the paper argues for a holistic or systemic approach that aims at incorporating the many truly fundamental and foundational aspects, like capital in the form of land or financial resources, or power. Since many forces shape the building, it is a unique source in its own right that can be used, in turn, for an enhanced understanding of past societies. At the same time, this broader assessment is meaningful and relevant for us today.</p>
