About this journal Starting in 2023, the Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte will be transferred to Open Access Gold on a year-by-year basis. All articles will thus immediately appear under the Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND. There will be no publication costs for the authors. The Open Access transformation is based on <A href="https://www.degruyter.com/publishing/publications/openaccess/open-access-articles/subscribe-open?lang=en">Subscribe-to-Open</A>, an alternative model that enables the full transfer of journals into Open Access through the continuation of existing subscriptions. The prerequisite for successful transformation is that subscriptions are continued to the same extent as before. The editors of the Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte and the publisher De Gruyter would therefore like to thank all subscribers for their support, which has made the transformation to Open Access possible. History and scope Founded by Wilhelm Waetzold and Ernst Gall in 1932, the Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte is published quarterly by Deutscher Kunstverlag. As the leading international German-language journal of art history it is one of the foremost periodicals of the academic discipline world-wide. Scholarly articles undergo a double-blind peer review by two independent experts; contributions are accepted in German as well as in English, French, and Italian. The Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte is a journal covering the whole range of art-historical matters. It offers a space for contributions dealing with all epochs and subjects, and using all methodical approaches. Open to art-historians from all points of the compass, it should at the same time serve to retain the polyglot nature of the discipline. Organisation The editorial office of the Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte was located at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich from 2020 to 2024. Since January 2020, Gerrit Walczak is Managing Editor. The publisher delegates editorship to five Editors covering different areas of the discipline. For the sake of openness and plurality, Editors will generally serve for five years. The annual withdrawal of a member of the editorial board, and the subsequent by-election of a new Editor, assures steady change while maintaining continuity. The Editors are nominated by an advisory committee, whose members are recruited from the institutes of art history at German universities, or operating outside higher education, and from the three German art historical research establishments at Florence, Paris, and Rome. Each institute or research establishment is invited to send a representative. Additionally, the board of directors of Deutscher Verband für Kunstgeschichte, the directorate of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte and Deutscher Kunstverlag are represented each by a consultative member. All members serve on the committe for six years unless their term is extended. Submissions The Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte accepts only contributions that have not been published elsewhere. Submissions are welcome in German, English, French, and Italian. Translations of essays either previously published or about to be published as well as outtakes from books in the making will not be processed. The editorial office assumes that articles and reviews are not parallely submitted to other journals. Articles will first be assessed by the editorial office and the editorial board, then passed on anonymously to two external referees.

Über diese Zeitschrift Mit Beginn des Jahres 2023 wird die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte jahrgangsweise in den Goldenen Open Access überführt. Alle Artikel erscheinen damit ohne Zeitverzug unter der Creative-Commons-Lizenz CC BY-NC-ND. Für die Autorinnen und Autoren entstehen keine Publikationskosten. Die Open Access-Transformation erfolgt auf der Basis von <A href="https://www.degruyter.com/publishing/publikationen/openaccess/open-access-artikel/subscribe-open?lang=de">Subscribe-to-Open</A>, eines alternativen Modells, das durch die Weiterführung bestehender Abonnements die vollständige Überführung von Zeitschriften in Open Access ermöglicht. Voraussetzung dafür ist, dass die Abonnements im bisherigen Umfang fortgeführt werden. Geschichte und Programm Die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte wurde 1932 in Berlin gegründet und erscheint vier Mal im Jahr im Deutschen Kunstverlag. Als international führende Fachzeitschrift deutschsprachiger Kunstgeschichte ist sie zugleich eines der bedeutendsten Publikationsmedien für Kunstgeschichte weltweit. Die von unabhängigen Gutachterinnen und Gutachtern geprüften wissenschaftlichen Beiträge werden in Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch oder Italienisch veröffentlicht. Die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte ist eine Zeitschrift für das gesamte Fach. Sie veröffentlicht Beiträge aus allen Bereichen der Kunstgeschichte. Dies bezieht sich sowohl auf die Vielfalt der Forschungsgebiete und -objekte als auch auf die Pluralität von Methoden in der empirischen Forschung und der kunstwissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung. Die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte ist als ein repräsentatives Organ der Disziplin konzipiert. Die vorhandenen theoretischen Orientierungen und empirischen Forschungsgebiete übergreifend, steht sie allen Kunsthistorikerinnen und Kunsthistorikern offen. Vor dem Horizont einer globalisierten Wissenschaft ist es ihr zugleich ein Anliegen, die Rolle des Deutschen als Wissenschaftssprache aktiv und nachhaltig zu stärken. Mit der weitestmöglichen Entbindung von einem bestimmten Personal und mit ihrer aufwendigen Qualitätskontrolle stellt die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte keine traditionelle Herausgeber/innenzeitschrift dar, sondern möchte in erster Linie eine Zeitschrift ihrer Autorinnen und Autoren sein. Organisation Redakteur ist seit Januar 2020 Gerrit Walczak. Die Redaktion der Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte war von 2020 bis 2024 am Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in München angesiedelt, seit 2025 arbeitet Gerrit Walczak als freier Redakteur für den Deutschen Kunstverlag. Charakteristisch für die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte ist die Neutralisierung ihrer Entscheidungsverfahren gegen die institutionelle Ansässigkeit der Zeitschrift. Der Verlag delegiert die Herausgeber/innenschaft an ein Herausgeber/innengremium, welches in seiner Zusammensetzung unterschiedliche Aspekte des Faches abdeckt. Zur Sicherstellung der angestrebten Offenheit und Pluralität wird die Zeitschrift von einem Gremium geleitet, dessen fünf Mitglieder in der Regel für eine Amtszeit von jeweils fünf Jahren tätig sind. Jedes Jahr scheidet eine/r der fünf Herausgeber/innen aus und wird durch eine/n neue/n ersetzt. Dieses System sorgt für ständigen Wechsel bei Wahrung der gebotenen institutionellen Kontinuität. Die Nominierung der einzelnen Herausgeberinnen und Herausgeber erfolgt durch einen wissenschaftlichen Beirat. Der wissenschaftliche Beirat rekrutiert sich aus den universitären und außeruniversitären kunsthistorischen Instituten und Forschungseinrichtungen in Deutschland sowie den drei Auslandsinstituten in Florenz, Paris und Rom. Jedes dieser Institute ist berechtigt und eingeladen, ein/e Vertreter/in, der der Gruppe der Professor/innen (bzw. der Direktion) angehört, in den Beirat zu entsenden. Als beratende Mitglieder sind im Beirat zudem ein/e Angehörige/r des Vorstands des Deutschen Verbands für Kunstgeschichte, des Direktoriums des Zentralinstituts für Kunstgeschichte sowie ein/e Repräsentant/in des Deutschen Kunstverlags vertreten. Die Amtszeit der Beiratsmitglieder beträgt in der Regel sechs Jahre, kann jedoch verlängert werden. Der Beirat ist, wie auch die amtierenden Herausgeberinnen und Herausgeber, zu Vorschlägen für die Nominierung neuer Herausgeberinnen und Herausgeber berechtigt. Er ermittelt durch Abstimmung die jeweils jährlich neu in das Herausgeber/innengremium zu entsendende Person. Zur Abstimmung gelangt eine Auswahl von Kandidat/innen, die die beratenden Mitglieder des Beirats aus den eingereichten Vorschlägen erstellen. In das Herausgeber/innengremium entsandt wird die/der Kandidat/in, die/der die meisten Stimmen erhält. Begutachtungsverfahren Alle eingereichten, für die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte in Frage kommenden Beiträge werden dem Verfahren des Doppelblindgutachtens unterzogen, d. h. jeweils zwei außenstehende und unabhängige Fachkolleg/innen werden um ihre Einschätzung des vorgelegten Manuskripts gebeten, wobei sowohl die Gutachter/innen als auch die Begutachteten anonym bleiben. Erst im Anschluss an diesen Verfahrensschritt erfolgt die Entscheidung zur Publikation, die dem Gremium der Herausgeberinnen und Herausgeber aufgrund ihrer fachlichen Kompetenzen obliegt.

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>This essay departs from documenta 14’s reading of Gustave Courbet’s drawing <italic>Alms from a Beggar at Ornans</italic> (1868) in the opening room of the Neue Galerie in Kassel and seeks to unravel the complex aesthetic and semantic web drawn across the exhibits in the room in relation to the drawing. Based on this close reading, the article critically engages with some of the core concepts of documenta 14’s curatorial project including solidarity, hospitality, alternative economies, and non-reciprocal forms of exchange, in order to reflect on the discrepancies embedded in the radical public rhetoric of the show.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Must a global art history follow the logic of economic globalization or does it call for an alternative conception of critical globality to be able to effectively theorize relationships of connectivity that encompass disparities as well as contradictions? This article investigates the potential of transculturation as a method to address a number of the pressing questions faced by art history in the wake of the ‘global turn’. It begins by tracing the genealogies of approaches that sought to incorporate the ‘world’ within the scope of the discipline a century ago and queries the epistemic legacies of this historiographic move. By shifting the focus of enquiry beyond Euro-America, it looks for a way through which the practice of art history can translate the intellectual insights of non-European experiences into globally intelligible analyses.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Whereas the spectacle is traditionally regarded in contrast to socio-political engagement, this contribution examines how recent activist art projects tend to challenge this opposition. Building on a historical and theoretical reconstruction of the actual tensions between concepts of social and aesthetic critique, the article proposes a more neutral, descriptive usage of the term ‘spectacle’ and analyzes the critical potential of spectacular strategies in contemporary art based on case studies (Alfredo Jaar, <italic>Center for Political Beauty</italic>, Yvon Chabrowski). In this context the creation of normatively ambivalent situations as well as a self-reflective move that scrutinizes the idea of political critique in art <italic>per se</italic>, are described as central characteristics of a critical approach.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Mark Bradford describes his practice as “social abstraction”, defined as “abstract art with a social or political context clinging to the edges”. The article addresses Bradford’s exhibition <italic>Tomorrow is Another Day</italic> at the American Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale and considers the artist’s claim through the critical reception of his work alongside central debates within the history of modernism. It then explores how dispossession and racialization can be figured in relation to modernist myths such as the grid. Finally, in addressing the “social” in Bradford’s practice, the study questions the collaboration Bradford embarked on with Rio Terà dei Pensieri, an organisation supporting the reintegration of prisoners and people under criminal judgment in Venice, arguing that the reformism of that project cuts against Bradford’s use of myth as a mode of resistance.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Dating back to the early 2000s, a much discussed ‘ethical turn’ of the discourse of contemporary art has affected (and continues to infect) the entire field, from art practice, to curating, to criticism, to education, to the business of art. This turn – which arguably resumes one of the steadfast dialectical features of modernism as such – has caused deep schisms between defenders of art’s autonomy and those who see art as increasingly obliged to engage in moral, social, and political issues – due to claimed urgencies of the contemporary condition. The essay ponders various conceptual and philosophical underpinnings of this ethical conjuncture and makes a plea for an aesthetics of responsibility in opposition to the neoliberal responsibilization palpable in contemporary art and culture.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>This article critically reworks the issue of the social impact of art in terms of its ‘effectiveness’. The study shows art’s general economy by taking into account a number of ambivalences, difficulties, and deficiencies related to art activities that turn towards the social, political, economic, and cultural exterior of the field of artistic production. Finally, it tries to mount a careful, complex, and balanced defense of their potentials. Reframing and grounding the discussion on artistic activism in selected concepts from political theory, the author argues that if artistic practices are to be socially effective, art needs to be understood and practiced as a politic of redistribution. A way of practicing such a politic is to be sought in understanding and performing action as susceptible to interception. This entails responsibility for the usage of an action, for co-actions that accompany it, and for potential alliances with intercepting subjects.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>Following debates on participation and the relationship between art and politics as a central question of contemporary art, this essay discusses networked communities in the visual cultures of ‘Post-Internet Art’. For DIS and Juliana Huxtable digital communities are both the topic of their installations and pictures and part of their artistic activities within the internet: the blog <italic>DIS Magazine</italic> and the tumblr blog <italic>Blue Lip Black Witch-Cunt</italic>. In comparing their artistic practice with network-like communication in magazines of the 1970s, the essay argues that it is not a central concern of post-internet art how network images may subvert the economy of images in the net. Rather this kind of art demonstrates the effects of networks, in which participation causes singularity instead of community.</abstract>

<abstract><title style='display:none'>Abstract</title>This essay is concerned with tracing the political dimensions of the ‘anomaly’ – in a period when the structuring conditions that the term refers to emerge rather as the ‘new normal’, even as historical continuities come to light and reveal that little is altogether new. We can see this in debates on whether contemporary art is exceptional or exemplary in a political economy characterised by the precarity of labour and life amidst relentless commodification. In this light, the article attends to the epistemic ‘economies’ of the rule and the exception, in order to foreground debates over value production in Marxist feminist and ecological theories of reproductive labour, with some attention as well to critical theories of race. This is an attempt to ground the status of the anomalous as a key means for the politics of artistic work and labour in the present.</abstract>

Mit Beginn des Jahres 2023 wird die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte jahrgangsweise in den Goldenen Open Access überführt. Die Ausgaben erscheinen damit ohne Zeitverzug unter der Creative-Commons-Lizenz CC BY-NC-ND. Für die Autorinnen und Autoren entstehen keine Publikationskosten. Die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte druckt ausschließlich Originalbeiträge. Übersetzungen andernorts erschienener oder erscheinender Aufsätze sowie Vorabkapitel in Arbeit befindlicher Bücher können nicht berücksichtigt werden. Die Redaktion geht zudem davon aus, dass ihr die Manuskripte exklusiv angeboten werden und nicht zeitgleich einem anderen Periodikum vorliegen. Die Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte befolgt eine Qualitätskontrolle durch ein double blind peer review, in dem die Anonymität von Autor/in und Gutachter/in gewahrt bleibt. Alle Einsendungen werden zunächst im Herausgeberkreis geprüft und zur Begutachtung an externe Leser/innen geschickt. Die Zeitschrift veröffentlicht Beiträge in deutscher, englischer, französischer oder italienischer Sprache. Die Redaktion behält sich vor, behutsam in den Text stilistisch einzugreifen. Der Rezensionsteil der Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte bietet ein Forum für ausführliche Buchbesprechungen, die ihren Gegenstand umfassend und kritisch zum Forschungsstand ins Verhältnis setzen und insbesondere nach der Relevanz des rezensierten Buches fragen. Herausgeber/innen und Redaktionen bitten um Verständnis dafür, dass unverlangt eingesandte Rezensionen nicht berücksichtigt werden können. Die Redaktion tritt in der Regel an potenzielle Rezensent/innen heran, ist ihrerseits aber auch für Vorschläge offen. Sie bittet aber ausdrücklich darum, dass Autor/innen oder Herausgeber/innen von Büchern nicht ihrerseits mit Vorschlägen für potenzielle Rezensenten an die Zeitschrift herantreten. Rezensionen und Beiträge zur Rubrik »Debatten« unterliegen nicht dem peer review, werden jedoch von den Herausgeber/innen vor der endgültigen Annahme zum Druck geprüft. Anfragen bezüglich Rezensionen sowie Rezensionsexemplare sollten an die Redaktion gerichtet werden. Über die Drucklegung eines Manuskriptes entscheiden die Herausgeber/innen und Redaktion der Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte. Nachfragen, zu welchem Zeitpunkt ein Beitrag erscheint, können von Redaktion und Verlag nicht beantwortet werden. Die Entscheidung über den Inhalt eines Heftes liegt bei der Redaktion.
