In addition to Albrecht Dürer and Marcantonio Raimondi, Lucas van Leyden was one of the most well-known printmakers of the Renaissance. This catalogue is the first to show a rich selection of some 100 works on paper from the inventory of the Staatliche Graphischen Sammlung München. They comprehensibly trace Lucas van Leyden’s artistic development and also provide profound insights into his visual imagery. Van Leyden is famous for his delicate technique. The subtle gray graduations, with which he created spatial depth and atmospheric moods, fascinated his fellow artists and collectors very early. And today, his highly imaginative, narrative art still draws viewers into its spell through its original interpretations of traditional subject matter and new unconventional themes.
