The former crematorium in Berlin-Wedding, now a pulsating cultural quarter, reflects the city’s history in a very unique way: Erected from 1909-10 as Berlin’s first crematorium, the building itself is a testament to cultural and historical change, which was completed with the introduction of cremation, a practice that had once been frowned upon as “heathen.” Against resistance from the church, this alternative burial form was able to establish itself in the German Empire as an expression of progress, secularization and hygienic consciousness. The Krematorium Wedding was officially inaugurated in 1912 and remained in operation until 2002. After temporarily remaining empty, a conversion into the silent green Cultural Quarter began in 2013. It opened its doors for special events a few months later.
