In our seventeenth episode, we are at the Kunstmuseum Basel. The exhibition Matisse, Derain and their friends can be seen until January 21, 2024. Nicole Schwarz from Deutscher Kunstverlag talks to Elena Degen, assistant curator of the exhibition. She answers questions such as: What defines the Fauvism art movement? Why is it important to recognize the role of women in the Fauvism movement? And what can visitors to the exhibition look forward to?

Fauvism, the first avant-garde movement of the 20th century, shaped the art scene in Paris from 1904 to 1908 and influenced artists such as Georges Braque and Raoul Dufy. The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel presents the Fauves’ color experiments, questions conventional approaches and highlights the work of artists such as Émilie Charmy and Marie Laurencin. For the first time, it provides insights into the Fauvist art trade, largely organized by the gallery owner Berthe Weill.
