Franz Lenk. Der entwirklichte Blick

Duration: 01/29/2023 to 04/16/2023
Place: Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie, Constance

The painter Franz Lenk was one of the most important representatives of a new objectivity and romanticism at the end of the 1920s. Only after 1926 he was able to celebrate greater artistic success in Berlin. Nevertheless, his artistic training and his early work connect him with Dresden. His dignified, often quiet and nature-inspired paintings struck a chord during the turbulent Great Depression.

The exhibition presents paintings from over 20 public and private collections. In addition, paintings by his fellow artists from the group “Die Sieben” – Theo Champion, Adolf Dietrich, Hasso von Hugo, Alexander Kanoldt, Franz Radziwill and Georg Schrimpf – complement the presentation. Biographical and art-historical insights, among others on Lenk’s world view and its manifestation in his painting as well as on the artist’s ambivalent attitude in the years 1933 to 1945, complete the picture of a hitherto largely underestimated artist of the 20th century.
