C. O. Paeffgen, whose full name is Claus Otto Paeffgen, was born in Cologne in 1933, and the artist has remained closely interconnected to his Rhenish native city. For more than 50 years he has followed societal phenomena and transformations in object-like Umwicklungen (wall and floor sculptures) and clearly outlined paintings. Paeffgen selects. He marks, accentuates, takes a position, and sometimes uses formal means to obscure. He continues to consistently develop his work – about which he once claimed that “Anyone could do what I do” – and casts love or freedom into concise signs.
This Villa Grisebach catalogue has compiled Paeffgen’s works from 1969-2016, permitting an overview of the playfully light, sometimes absurd, and gleefully ironic oeuvre of this artist from Cologne.
