Christoph Schwarz (c. 1545–1592) was one of the most influential artists at the court of the Bavarian dukes Albert V and William V. In his early years he designed many famous mural paintings, whose lively compositions are manifestations of the competition with Venice. When William V came to power, Schwarz became the preferred painter for the Jesuits’ monumental altarpieces. His portrayals of Mary and the Battle between the Archangel Michael and Lucifer (Fall of the Angels) high altar in St. Michael’s Church in Munich remained stylistic influences for generations.
This is the first comprehensive monograph to be dedicated to one of the most important court artists of the late 16th century.
