The gallerist, author and publisher Helmut Klewan (*1943) was one of the most important supporters of Austrian art. This exhibition catalogue introduces an exceptional collection of works of Classical Modernism and postwar art in the Klewan Collection, which has never before been shown in this fullness and complexity. The collection, which is at home in Vienna, includes paintings, graphics and sculptures by very well-known artists, including Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst, Jean Dubuffet, Francis Bacon, Arnulf Rainer, Maria Lassnig and Louise Bourgeois.
Nearly 170 exhibits reflect the owner’s personal passion for collecting, one almost without compare, that very clearly documents the art historical development from the 20th century to the present. Many of these works are now being presented to the public for the first time.
