Ever since the golden age of painting in Denmark in the early 19th century, Realism has played a special role in northern European art. Painting together outdoors has been the main objective of the so-called North German Realists, a "mobile temporary artists' colony" of sorts. Focusing on landscapes, still lifes,
figure compositions, portraits, and nudes by 18 artists, this lavishly illustrated catalog stands as a first attempt to provide an overview as well as an assessment of this contemporary realist movement.
