The Staatliche Museum Schwerin maintains a small, but exquisite collection of works by the Cranachs. Among these are not only drawings, paintings and prints by Lucas Cranach the Elder and his son Lucas Cranach the Younger, but also works carried out in their Wittenberg workshop. In essays focusing on biographical, art historical or municipal themes and a vivid catalogue section, this volume is the first to introduce all of the Cranach works in the museum collection.
An introduction on the Cranach family history, and on the founding of the workshop business that was organized on the principle of a division of labor, takes shape against the background of the historical narrative of the Protestant Reformation.
