Der zweibändige Bestandskatalog widmet sich einem bisher kaum erschlossenen Teil des Sammlungsbestandes des Städel Museums. Alle Werke – darunter Gemälde von Adam Elsheimer, Georg Flegel oder Johann Heinrich Roos – sind sowohl kunsthistorisch als auch gemäldetechnologisch nach den neuesten naturwissenschaftlichen Methoden umfassend untersucht worden. Unter Einbeziehung des jeweiligen kulturhistorischen Hintergrunds gelingen dadurch neue Erkenntnisse zu Entstehung, Zuschreibung, Identifikation oder Deutung der einzelnen Gemälde. Die Zusammenschau bietet spannende Einblicke in die Sammlungs-, Ausstellungs- und Forschungsgeschichte und eröffnet ein Panorama auf die vielschichtige Kunstproduktion im frühneuzeitlichen Deutschland.

The collection catalogue is dedicated to a hitherto barely explored part of the holdings of the Städel Museum. All the works—including paintings by Adam Elsheimer, Georg Flegel, or Johann Heinrich Roos—have been examined in detail from the perspective of both art history and painting technology based on the most recent scientific methods. The incorporation of the respective cultural-historical background gives rise to new insights regarding the creation, attribution, identification, or interpretation of the individual paintings. The overview provides fascinating insights into the history of the collection, exhibitions, and research, and opens up a panorama of multi-layered art production in early modern Germany.

Almut Pollmer-Schmidt studierte Kunstgeschichte in Dresden und Leiden und promovierte zu einem Thema der holländischen Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts. Seit 2010 ist sie am Städel Museum tätig. Als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin wirkte sie u.a. bei der Ausstellung „Dürer. Kunst – Künstler – Kontext" mit sowie in der Bestands- und sammlungshistorischen Forschung.

Almut Pollmer-Schmidt studied art history in Dresden and Leiden and received her doctorate on a topic of 17th century Dutch painting. She has been working at the Städel Museum since 2010. As a research associate, she worked on the exhibition "Dürer. Kunst – Künstler – Kontext" as well as in research on the history of the collection and its holdings.
