The invention of the zodiac in Babylonia was a turning point in the history of science and culture. This book tells the untold story of the origin of the zodiac, its journey through the ancient world from Babylonia to Egypt, the Greco-Roman world, and beyond, and its transformative effect on science and culture. What is the zodiac and what was it used for? How did it transform astronomical, computational, astrological, religious, and medical practices? How did this knowledge gain acceptance in different ancient cultures? The role of images in communicating and transferring knowledge across cultural and linguistic boundaries is stressed throughout the book.
