What defines a photographic image? Photography can fill us with awe, cause doubt, or lead us to believe. It is not the subject alone that matters, but the image’s materiality as well: whether on glass, paper, or a screen, every form of expression will influence our perception. The publication Echt Foto! focuses on photography as a material object and explores its various manifestations from its beginnings to the present day. On the basis of selected photographs and photographic approaches, this publication reveals the close interlinking of an image’s impact and its material. It examines the way that framing and context shape the image’s materiality and demonstrates how photography itself makes matter visible. A glossary explains key terms of photographic image production, and an interview discusses the possibilities and challenges of digital photography and AI-generated images. Thus, the volume offers a multifaceted perspective on a medium in transition—and on the question of what makes a photographic image “real” today.
