This volume in the Herbert W. Franke Edition presents extraordinary literary and art-historical testimony to its time. For the first time, autobiographical fragments have been brought together to paint the portrait of a man who lived as a bridge-builder between science and art. At the heart of the book is a travelogue from 1984. It takes readers on a journey through the United States to meet the pioneers of computer animation—Chuck Csuri at Ohio State University, filmmaker John Whitney in Los Angeles, and Pixar founders Ed Catmull, Alvy Ray Smith, and Loren Carpenter. Particularly fascinating is the account of SIGGRAPH, which brings together research, industry, and art. This volume is more than a biography—it is an intimate, vivid chronicle of the birth of digital aesthetics, which has forever changed our contemporary media world.
