A Place in the Sun, Under the Veil follows Nuremberg‑born architect Johann Adam Rennebaum, who left Germany for Egypt and built a thriving practice designing mosques, grand hotels, villas, schools, hospitals and diplomatic buildings for both German clients and Egyptian institutions. It reconstructs the architecture of the German community against the backdrop of Khedival rule and the “Veiled Protectorate” established under British control. Grounded in extensive archival research and previously unknown plans, photographs, and estate material, the book follows Rennebaum’s projects across Cairo, Alexandria, and Port Said and shows how architecture functioned as a visual language of power. By bringing architectural and cultural history into dialogue, the study offers new perspectives on European presences in Egypt.
