Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, where the Indigenous people still view themselves as part of a vital, animate natural environment. This close relationship has a long history, evidenced by some extraordinary ancient artifacts made of gold, greenstone, clay, and plant fibers dating back to pre-Columbian times. This volume presents a selection of such archaeological artifacts and provides insights into spiritual beliefs and crafting traditions through everyday objects and artistically made depictions of people, animals, plants, hybrid creatures, and shamans. At the same time, it sets these objects into dialogue with the viewpoints, myths, and narratives of Costa Rica’s contemporary Indigenous societies. In this way, the publication reveals a relationship between human beings and the environment spanning centuries, and so demonstrates how knowledge, beliefs, and narratives about the living world continue to be passed down even to the present day.
Developed in collaboration with the Ethnological Museum, National Museums in Berlin, part of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation; the Humboldt Forum Foundation in the Berlin Palace; and two of Costa Rica’s most important museums: the Museo del Oro Precolombino (Pre-Columbian Gold Museum), part of the Museums of the Central Bank, and the Museo del Jade (Jade Museum).
