Cornelius Gurlitt’s body of journalistic work spans six decades, from the 1870s to the early 1930s. The influence of this university professor, journalist, and networker on the reform processes of the long era “around 1900” is evident in his diverse writings on cultural and contemporary issues. These comments focused in particular on the fields of fine arts, architecture, historic preservation, urban planning, and education and labor policy. Gurlitt’s self-conception as both a witness to and an active shaper of the transition from historicism to modernism is consistently evident. This anthology provides the first comprehensive examination of his contribution to this transformative process from various perspectives.
