Kaum ein Künstler hat das Spanienbild, das man sich um 1900 im Ausland machte, so sehr geprägt wie Ignacio Zuloaga (1870–1945): stolze Toreros und temperamentvolle Flamenco-Tänzerinnen; das einfache Leben der Landbevölkerung, Asketen und Büßer in weiten, kargen Landschaften; Bettler, Kleinwüchsige und Hexen, die das Erbe von Altmeistern wie Diego Velázquez und Francisco de Goya aufrufen. In Zeiten massiver Industrialisierung und der zunehmenden Orientierung Spaniens an der europäischen Moderne wollte Zuloaga mit solchen Szenen die „spanische Seele" bewahren. Zu Lebzeiten des Künstlers wurde seine Malerei international gefeiert. Few other artists have shaped the image of Spain abroad around 1900 as much as Ignacio Zuloaga (1870-1945): proud toreros and spirited flamenco dancers; the simple life of the rural population, ascetics and penitents in vast, barren landscapes, and beggars, diminutive people and witches who invoke the legacy of old masters such as Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Goya. In times of massive industrialisation and Spain’s increasing orientation towards European modernism, Zuloaga aimed to preserve the “Spanish soul” with such scenes. The artist’s painting was celebrated internationally during his lifetime. This volume is the first comprehensive monographic publication on the artist to appear in German. „Ein Aspekt seiner Auftragsmalerei im letzten Lebensjahrzehnt wird in der Ausstellung nicht behandelt, allerdings im Katalog thematisiert.
