“Cohabitat Stadt“

Abstract

Franziska Klose photographs the habitats of urban plants. This article analyses her exhibition “Cohabitat Stadt”, held at Galerie Ursula Walter in Dresden from November 2025 to January 2026, as a constellation in which meaning emerges through the interplay of the photographs with other images, botanical information, and the space in which they were presented. Above all, the significance of the work is generated through the ways in which visitors encountered and established associations between images and texts on multiple levels: emotional, scientific, and aesthetic. By making plants the protagonists, the exhibition offers a new perspective on urban space and subverts simplistic dichotomies between nature and the city. Comparison with the artist’s book “Cohabitat Stadt” – another iteration of the project – shows how, in this altered constellation, the same photographs take on a more abstract character that brings the serial nature of the photographic project to the fore.
