“Auto-Photo: A Life in Portraits”, a Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) exhibition, was held at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) Galleries in Melbourne, Australia from June 6 to August 15, 2025. The exhibition sought to celebrate the work of Alan Adler (1932–2024), who for over fifty years maintained photobooths across Melbourne, while also acknowledging the historical and cultural significance of the device, noting 2025 marked 100 years since the patenting of the modern photobooth. This article considers the exhibition’s formation, alongside the history of the photobooth, and discusses the ideas and curatorial decisions which fed into the presentation’s overall aesthetic and experience.
