The Department of Architecture and Art History at the Technical University of Darmstadt is in possession of a collection of about 60,000 glass negatives in the standard format 8.5 × 10 cm. One of the special features of this collection, which was assembled for teaching purposes after the Second World War, is the large number of images of architecture with numerous unique photos of particular works of art. Among these are some taken by Hans Gerhard Evers (1900–1993), from 1950 to 1968 Professor of Art History in Darmstadt. In the project “Glass Slides and Art History”, the collection is currently being digitized and studied, so that experts and the interested public henceforth have access to it. With Evers’ photographs and his dedication to the creation of the Darmstadt collection serving as an example, the project will prompt further discussion of the role of photography for art history and the history of architecture in the 20th century.
