Abstract

The article discusses the drawing in the Munich Stadtmuseum of a model that, according to the caption, was intended for S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini. Based on a detailed examination of the elevation of the interior and exterior shown in the drawing, the ground plan is reconstructed. A precise analysis of the drawing reveals the same layout as that specified by Vasari for Jacopo Sansovino’s model for the new building of S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini from 1518. The resulting identification of the model is supplemented by a look at the style of Sansovino’s works and a comparison with Antonio da Sangallo’s model from 1518 for S. Giovanni dei Fiorentini. The attribution of the project represented to Raphael or Giulio Romano, which is now commonplace, although nothing of this has been handed down, is based on an aberrant interpretation of Vasari’s information and an inaccurate examination of the drawing.
